Broadway Steps Outside the Theater With New Hudson Valley Festival

Broadway is taking its performances beyond Manhattan this weekend with the launch of The Festival, a new three-day cultural event taking place August 14 through August 16 at Hutton Brickyards in Kingston, New York. The outdoor celebration brings Broadway performers and musical theater audiences together for a weekend combining live performances, music, comedy, dance, food, and other festival experiences.

Opening on August 14, the event represents a different approach to experiencing musical theater. Rather than centering on a single Broadway production inside a traditional theater, The Festival creates a larger outdoor environment where audiences can move between stages and activities throughout the day.

A New Setting for Broadway

Hutton Brickyards, located along the Hudson River in Kingston, provides the setting for the inaugural event. The historic property has become a destination for hospitality, entertainment, and cultural gatherings, making it a distinctive backdrop for a festival focused on live performance.

The outdoor format allows organizers to present several forms of entertainment at the same event. Audiences can attend scheduled performances while also participating in activities designed to create a more relaxed festival atmosphere.

The programming includes performances by established Broadway artists as well as performers from different areas of musical theater and entertainment. The opening-day lineup features Christopher Jackson, Adrienne Warren, Alex Newell, Betty Who, Eva Noblezada, Gianmarco Soresi, Mandy Gonzalez, Reeve Carney, and Solea Pfeiffer, among others.

Broadway Talent Across Multiple Stages

The Festival is structured around several performance spaces rather than one traditional theater stage. The main programming features concerts, individual performances, ensemble appearances, and special events throughout the weekend.

The broader lineup includes major names from Broadway history and contemporary musical theater, including Audra McDonald, Kelli O’Hara, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Adam Pascal, Anthony Rapp, Taye Diggs, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia.

The variety of performers gives the event an opportunity to highlight different generations of Broadway talent. Established performers appear alongside artists from newer productions and other areas of the entertainment industry, creating a program that reflects the range of contemporary musical theater.

The event also includes programming connected to Broadway history. One of the weekend’s notable presentations celebrates the 30th anniversary of Rent, bringing members of the original Broadway cast together for a special concert. The anniversary provides an opportunity for audiences to revisit one of musical theater’s most influential productions while seeing its original performers in a new setting.

More Than Traditional Theater

A major part of The Festival’s concept is its combination of theater with other forms of entertainment. In addition to scheduled Broadway performances, the weekend includes comedy, improv, dance activities, sing-alongs, a piano-bar experience, food and beverage options, and artisan vendors.

These additions are designed to make the event feel more like a cultural festival than a conventional theater engagement. Attendees can spend several hours exploring different activities rather than attending one performance and leaving afterward.

That format may also make Broadway culture more approachable for people who do not regularly attend theater productions. The combination of familiar performers, live music, informal activities, and an outdoor environment creates multiple ways for audiences to engage with musical theater.

Bringing Broadway to the Hudson Valley

The Festival also places Broadway talent in a different regional setting. Kingston is part of New York’s Hudson Valley, an area known for its arts communities, historic sites, independent businesses, and cultural attractions.

Hosting a Broadway-focused event in the region connects the theater community with an audience outside New York City’s traditional theater district. It also gives visitors another reason to explore the Hudson Valley while attending a major cultural event.

The location reflects the festival’s broader goal of expanding the environment in which live theater can be experienced. Instead of limiting Broadway programming to conventional venues, the event presents performers and musical theater traditions in a setting designed around outdoor entertainment and community participation.

A New Chapter for Live Musical Theater

The opening of The Festival on August 14 marks an interesting development for live entertainment in the United States. Its combination of Broadway performances, music, comedy, dance, and social activities demonstrates how established theatrical traditions can be presented in new formats.

The inaugural weekend will provide audiences with an opportunity to experience well-known Broadway performers in a setting that is substantially different from the traditional theater environment. It also brings together performers associated with different eras of musical theater, giving the event both contemporary and historical dimensions.

For the audience, the main takeaway is simple: The Festival offers Broadway as a broader cultural experience rather than a single theatrical production. By combining live performances with outdoor activities and community-oriented programming, the event introduces a festival model to a form of entertainment traditionally associated with dedicated theater venues.

As the inaugural weekend continues through August 16, The Festival’s first edition establishes a new meeting point between Broadway, outdoor entertainment, and Hudson Valley culture. Its opening on August 14 makes it one of the notable cultural events bringing live musical theater to audiences in a new setting this summer.
