AFI FEST 2026 reveals 157 films from 50 countries, bringing acclaimed filmmakers, new voices, and global cinema to Hollywood this October.

Hollywood received a sweeping preview of its next major film gathering on September 29, 2026, when the American Film Institute announced the complete lineup for AFI FEST 2026. The 40th edition of the festival will bring 157 films from 50 countries to Hollywood from October 21 through October 25, placing established filmmakers beside emerging voices in a program designed to showcase the breadth of contemporary cinema. The announcement gives film audiences a clearer picture of one of the fall season's major cultural events.

AFI FEST 2026 Builds A Wide Ranging Film Program

According to the American Film Institute, the AFI FEST 2026 program includes five Red Carpet Premieres, 12 Special Screenings, 13 Luminaries selections, 18 Discovery titles, 16 World Cinema selections, 17 documentaries, three After Dark films, four Guest Artistic Director presentations, 45 films in the Short Film Competition, and 24 films in the AFI Conservatory Showcase. AFI also reported that 45 percent of the official selections were directed by women and 32 percent were directed by BIPOC filmmakers.

The scale is notable, but the combination of recognized filmmakers and developing talent gives the program its cultural reach. The lineup includes work from Lee Chang dong, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi, Werner Herzog, Andrew Haigh, Mike Leigh, Céline Sciamma, Asghar Farhadi, Marie Kreutzer, Hong Sang soo, Quentin Dupieux, and other international filmmakers. Several selections arrive in Hollywood after earning recognition at major festivals earlier in 2026.

Among them is Lee Chang dong's "Possible Love," which received the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize at Venice. Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's "All of a Sudden" also joins the program after receiving recognition at Cannes. Other highlighted films include Herzog's "Bucking Fastard," Haigh's "A Long Winter," Mike Leigh's "Tender Loving Care," and the North American premieres of Farhadi's "Parallel Tales" and Sciamma's "Tutti Frutti."

Global Cinema Meets Hollywood Audiences

The international scope of AFI FEST 2026 is especially visible in the awards conversation. Ten films in the lineup are official national submissions for the Best International Feature category at the 99th Academy Awards. They represent Thailand, Japan, Palestine, Nepal, Germany, Chile, Canada, South Korea, Austria, and Singapore. Their inclusion makes the festival a useful meeting point for audiences interested in discovering films from different filmmaking traditions.

At the same time, AFI FEST is giving substantial space to short films and emerging filmmakers. The Short Film Competition contains 45 selections, while the Discovery section features 18 titles. The AFI Conservatory Showcase adds another 24 films. Together, these sections mean audiences will encounter work beyond the most recognizable names on the program, including filmmakers who may be appearing before a major Hollywood festival audience at an early stage in their careers.

AFI FEST Director Todd Hitchcock said the 40th edition celebrates filmmakers from around the world and noted that the program contains more than 80 features and nearly 70 shorts. Programming Director Abbie Algar described the festival as a mix of red carpet premieres, major works from established filmmakers, and debuts from emerging talent. The programming reflects that balance, connecting festival favorites with discoveries that have yet to reach broad audiences.

Why The 40th AFI FEST Matters For Film Audiences

For viewers, the September 29 announcement is more than a long list of screenings. It offers a snapshot of how international cinema, independent filmmaking, documentaries, shorts, animation, and major premieres can share one Hollywood platform. That range makes AFI FEST 2026 relevant both to dedicated festival followers and to audiences searching for filmmakers and stories outside mainstream theatrical releases.

The festival is scheduled for October 21 through October 25 in Hollywood, with programming centered at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Individual tickets are scheduled to go on sale October 3. Film audiences can explore the complete program through the official AFI FEST Film Guide and learn more about the filmmakers, screenings, and special presentations arriving in Hollywood. For viewers looking to discover new creative voices alongside internationally recognized directors, the newly announced program offers a focused look at the films and filmmakers shaping the festival conversation this fall.
