ZZ Top’s Drummer Frank Beard to Sit Out Australian Tour Due to Health Issues
ZZ Top has confirmed that drummer Frank Beard will be absent from the band’s upcoming Australian tour owing to health-related concerns. Initially announced over a month ago, Beard’s absence extends as he continues to focus on his recovery.
Details of the Absence
In a statement from Live Nation issued on April 24, it was clarified that Beard’s departure from the tour was advised by medical professionals. The band initially disclosed on March 15 that Beard had undergone an unspecified health procedure, necessitating his withdrawal from the ongoing Elevation tour.
Interim Arrangements
To maintain continuity during Beard’s absence, ZZ Top has enlisted John Douglas, a long-time associate and drummer, to fill in for him. Douglas, who has a history of stepping in for Beard, performed during a concert in Paris back in 2002 when Beard had to undergo an emergency appendectomy.
Focus on Recovery
Live Nation expressed optimism regarding Beard’s recovery journey, highlighting the effectiveness of his ongoing physical therapy. The band emphasized that prioritizing Beard’s health is essential, as his doctors have recommended an extended period of therapy for optimal recovery.
ZZ Top’s Legacy and Future Plans
Frank Beard has been part of ZZ Top since its inception in 1969. The band has maintained a remarkable lineup over the years, with only one significant change following the passing of bassist Dusty Hill in 2021. Currently, Elwood Francis serves as the bassist alongside Beard’s longtime bandmates Billy Gibbons and Douglas.
ZZ Top is set to embark on their first Australian tour since 2013, beginning on April 26, and it includes ten performances throughout Australia. Following this, they will tour New Zealand before resuming a North American tour in June, which will continue until October.
