2025 ACE Eddie Awards: Celebrating Excellence in Film and Television Editing
The American Cinema Editors (ACE) honored outstanding achievements in film and television editing at the 75th anniversary of the Eddie Awards, held Friday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall. This year’s event was notably rescheduled from its initial date of January 18 due to devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, transitioning from a traditional black-tie gala to an inclusive “Come as You Are” community fundraiser, with proceeds contributing to fire relief efforts.
A Showcase of Film and TV Excellence
Among the prestigious film awards, Universal’s Wicked claimed the title for Best Edited Comedy Theatrical Film, while Netflix’s Emilia Pérez received the accolade for Best Edited Drama Theatrical Film. In the animated category, The Wild Robot from Universal and DreamWorks topped the list for Best Edited Animated Feature.
The winners for documentary categories included Netflix’s Will & Harper, which secured the Best Edited Documentary Feature award, and Prime Video’s Road House, recognized as the Best Edited Non-Theatrical Feature Film.
Television Standouts
Across the television landscape, the ceremony highlighted exceptional editing in various genres. Notable winners included:
- Shōgun – Best Edited Drama Series
- What We Do in the Shadows – Best Edited Single Camera Comedy Series
- Frasier – Best Edited Multi-Camera Comedy Series
- Chimp Crazy – Best Edited Documentary Series
Looking Ahead to the Oscars
Emilia Pérez and Wicked were candidates for Best Film Editing at the Oscars later this month, although they lost to Sean Baker for Anora, marking one of four historic wins for Baker that night. Historically, the Eddie winner for theatrical drama has transitioned to win the Academy Award for Best Editing 14 out of the last 25 years, though it has not happened in the past four seasons.
Acknowledging Influential Figures
In recognition of exceptional contributions to the film industry, Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, was honored with the ACE Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award. Furthermore, esteemed film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch received Career Achievement Awards, celebrating their enduring impact on film editing.
Eligibility Criteria for the 2025 Awards
To qualify for the 2025 ACE Eddie Awards, films must have been released in theaters during the calendar year 2024, and television series must have aired from January 1 to November 1.
