Laurence Fishburne on Reprising His Role as Morpheus in The Matrix Franchise
Actor Laurence Fishburne has expressed uncertainty regarding his return as Morpheus in any future installments of The Matrix series. During an appearance on the talk show The View, he revealed that his previous inquiry about reprising the iconic role did not receive a favorable response from the production team.
Seeking Involvement in The Matrix: Resurrections
While discussing the potential for involvement in a fifth Matrix film, Fishburne mentioned the conditions that would influence his decision: “It depends on the circumstances, who was involved, how well the script has been written, if they offer me [a part].” He recollected that he had offered his services for the 2021 sequel, The Matrix: Resurrections, but was met with indifference.
“I offered my services to the fourth Matrix, and they didn’t respond well to that,” Fishburne stated. “For whatever reason, that didn’t happen. But that’s the truth. We’ll see.”
Reactions from Co-Hosts
Co-host Sara Haines encouraged Fishburne, saying, “You need to come back,” while Sunny Hostin implied that the decision could affect the quality of future Matrix films, suggesting that his involvement is crucial.
The Matrix: Resurrections Overview
Released in December 2021, The Matrix: Resurrections unfolds 20 years after the events of The Matrix Revolutions. In this installment, the central character, Neo, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, is living an unremarkable existence as Thomas Anderson in San Francisco. Despite his therapist’s prescription of blue pills to suppress his memories, Neo’s past reemerges when Morpheus, now portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, presents him with the red pill, reigniting his connection to the Matrix.
Notably, the film maintains some continuity by bringing back key characters from the original series, including Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity and Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe.
