Ragebound: a nostalgic journey with a modern twist

Ninja Video Game Renaissance: The Return of the Stealth Assassins

The fascination with ninjas has resurged in 2025, rekindling interest among gamers and action enthusiasts alike. The momentum ignited with the launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows in March, a game that captured the essence of stealthy gameplay interwoven with the historical allure of ninjas. This revival is further propelled by Sega’s forthcoming release of Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, marking the franchise’s first entry on home consoles in over two decades.

The Ninja Gaiden Phenomenon

The highlight of this ninja revival came when Koei Tecmo announced the development of three new Ninja Gaiden titles, marking the franchise’s first return after 11 years. Titled Ninja Gaiden 4, the new 3D entry will arrive in 2025, accompanied by a shadow drop of a remake titled Ninja Gaiden II Black, a modern adaptation of the original 2008 game for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms.

In addition to the 3D games, a 2D spin-off titled Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is also in development. Created by The Game Kitchen—known for its Blasphemous series—this entry fuses nostalgic pixel art with gameplay mechanics inspired by the more recent 3D installments, promising an engaging experience for both old fans and new players.

Gameplay and Mechanics

A preview of Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound by Rolling Stone provided insights into its game mechanics and structure. The game stands out as a side story set on the same night as the original NES title, featuring protagonists Kenji and Kumori. Kenji, a trainee of the renowned Ryu Hayabusa, must protect their village from demonic forces while Ryu is away searching for his father. Kumori, a member of the rival Black Spider Clan, becomes entwined with Kenji’s journey.

Visual and Combat Designs

The game’s aesthetics draw closer to the original 1988 arcade iteration, utilizing a 16-bit art style that enhances the overall visual experience. Each character and background is meticulously designed, allowing for a rich gaming environment. Combat mechanics have evolved, featuring fluid movements where Kenji slices through enemies—often in a single strike—and can utilize deflecting tactics for projectiles.

Innovative Gameplay Features

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound implements various modernizations while remaining faithful to classic gameplay. Notably, the introduction of “Ninja Fusion” allows players to switch control between Kenji and Kumori, integrating unique abilities and tactical gameplay. Kumori can employ teleportation techniques to tackle platforming challenges, providing an additional layer of strategy during gameplay.

Game Structure and Replayability

Structured as a traditional level-based game, Ragebound embraces classic design principles that encourage players to refine their skills through repeated play. Each level concludes with a grading system based on performance, offering incentives for mastering the gameplay mechanics and improving speed runs.

Anticipation and Release

With its combination of retro charm and contemporary design, Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound aims to balance nostalgia with accessibility, catering to both hardcore fans of the series and newcomers seeking a challenging yet manageable gaming experience. Scheduled for release in summer 2025, it will be available on major platforms, including Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 & 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
