On August 15, 2025, the Sarajevo Film Festival, one of the most prestigious film festivals in Eastern Europe, honored Italian director Paolo Sorrentino and U.S. actor Willem Dafoe with the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo. This prestigious award recognizes significant contributions to cinema and was presented to the pair in recognition of their outstanding artistic achievements.

Paolo Sorrentino, whose films have repeatedly garnered international acclaim, was celebrated for his unique directorial vision and exploration of Italy’s political, cultural, and historical landscapes. The festival honored Sorrentino by hosting a special retrospective of his works, allowing audiences to experience iconic films such as Il Divo, The Great Beauty, and Youth. These films, rich with thematic depth and visual grandeur, have made Sorrentino one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation.

Willem Dafoe’s Legendary Career in Focus

Willem Dafoe, known for his incredible range and commitment to roles that often require deep emotional and physical transformation, was also recognized for his exceptional body of work. Dafoe’s performances in films like Platoon, The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Florida Project have earned him widespread critical acclaim. His presence at the Sarajevo Film Festival was celebrated not only for his remarkable acting but also for his continued influence in both independent and mainstream cinema.

The festival’s opening night also showcased Pavilion, a dark comedy by Bosnian director Dino Mustafic, which set the tone for the event’s broad celebration of both regional and global cinema. Over the next several days, the festival featured over 250 films, attracting filmmakers and cinephiles from around the world.

A Celebration of Global Cinema

In addition to the special retrospective, the festival included a strong selection of southern, central, and eastern European films competing for the coveted Best Feature Film award. Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa chaired the jury, which added a touch of critical gravitas to the proceedings. Moreover, the festival partnered with the Doha Film Institute to present a curated selection of Arab films, allowing audiences to explore the diversity of cinema from the Middle East, with a particular focus on rare early 2000s footage from Gaza, providing a poignant reflection on the region’s cultural heritage.

This year’s Sarajevo Film Festival proved once again that it serves as a vital space for cross-cultural dialogue and an essential platform for both emerging and established filmmakers. With stars like Sorrentino and Dafoe gracing the event, the festival continues to serve as a powerful reminder of cinema’s role in shaping cultural conversations worldwide.
