New Haven Night Market Returns with Art, Music & Henna on July 25

by Artist Highlight Contributor

On July 25, the New Haven Night Market made its debut summer edition in downtown New Haven’s Chapel Street Historic District. Hosted by the Town Green District (also known as DowntownNHV), the event opened from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m., offering free admission and welcoming all ages—including leashed pets.

The evening featured over 100 local vendors showcasing art, clothing, jewelry, books, records and handmade soaps, alongside a curated food lineup that included favorites like Sanctuary Kitchen, Somos Arepas, and The Cheese Truck. In keeping with the city’s vibrant food and culture scene, the market spotlighted community entrepreneurs and artisans offering diverse regional fare.

Visitors also enjoyed live performances on the Night Market Stage—starting with jazz sets and steel band music, followed by line dancing taught by Bodacious Brandon with beats by DJ Too Much. The programming combined high-energy performance with inclusive dance lessons, inviting the crowd to participate and enjoy.

A highlight of the evening was the interactive art and craft zone. Attendees could design tie-dye shirts at a creative station, contribute to a community mural installed on Chapel Street, and receive custom henna tattoos by artist Arshiya in the Graduate Hotel lobby.

Alcohol service operated via reusable $3 drink tokens, designed to enhance sustainability while simplifying transactions. Tokens, purchased at the ID check and token booth, can be redeemed at multiple festival dates—seeing drink purchases directly benefit vendors with no processing middlemen.

Additional engagement offerings included junk journal making with CT Junk Journal and an eco-friendly sorting challenge presented by EcoGreen Pathways, where guests tested their recycling skills in a fun, educational format.

The design and layout of the market promoted open-air exploration and seamless movement. Fest-goers were able to stroll along Chapel from College to York Streets, navigate vendor clusters, and enjoy shaded seating areas and photo opportunities—including street art and selfie setups scattered throughout.

In its first-ever summer iteration, the Night Market extended its signature energy into new territory. It reinforced its community role not just as a celebration of local makers and flavors, but as a space for art-making, cultural connection, and inclusive fun. From small-business pop-ups to outdoor entertainment, the event emphasized creativity, sustainability, and accessible public space—inviting New Haven residents and visitors alike to experience the best of the city after the sun sets.
