Judd Apatow to Curate Groundbreaking Comedy Exhibition at the Academy Museum

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has announced that renowned writer, director, and producer Judd Apatow will serve as the first-ever guest curator for its upcoming exhibition dedicated to comedy in film. This unique exhibition is set to open in April 2027 and promises to explore the art of comedy through an impressive array of films and filmmakers.

A Unique Collaboration

Announced during a 20th anniversary screening of Apatow’s directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), the collaboration marks a significant milestone for the museum. Apatow expressed his excitement, stating, “The cat is out of the bag! I’ll be working with the Academy Museum to showcase some of my favorite films and filmmakers throughout the ages. I am honored to curate this project alongside the museum’s talented team and with access to the Academy Collection. We hope to leave visitors inspired and, of course, with a big smile on their faces.”

Exhibition Details

This unnamed exhibition will be the Academy Museum’s inaugural dedication to comedy, utilizing the extensive Academy Collection, which comprises over 52 million items. According to Amy Homma, Director and President of the Academy Museum, “We’re thrilled to announce that our first guest curator at the Academy Museum is none other than the hilarious and brilliant Judd Apatow. Judd’s comedies have shaped entertainment and culture, and we know his expertise, appreciation, and love for the art of comedy will bring a unique exhibition to our audiences.”

A Celebration of Comedy

The announcement coincided with a special panel featuring notable cast members from The 40-Year-Old Virgin, including Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Jane Lynch, Kat Dennings, and Gerry Bednob. The event provided a platform to reflect on the impact of Apatow’s work over the past two decades.

Since his debut film, Apatow has expanded his repertoire with several successful titles, including:

  • Funny People (2009)
  • This Is 40 (2012)
  • Trainwreck (2015)
  • The King of Staten Island (2020)
