IMAX Reports Record Earnings in Q1 2025

Exceptional Box Office Performance

IMAX has achieved unprecedented success in the first quarter of 2025, with global box office earnings reaching $298 million. This impressive figure marks a notable increase of 12% compared to the same period last year and was significantly bolstered by a record-breaking Chinese New Year holiday, contributing $182 million—more than triple the previous record.

Local Language Film Success

Among the standout performances was the animated film Ne Zha 2, which has raked in over $164 million in IMAX revenue. This accomplishment has crowned it as the highest-grossing local language animated film in IMAX history, highlighting the company’s ability to capitalize on regional content.

Top Contributors to Box Office

Following closely behind the Chinese New Year success were several major Hollywood titles, including:

  • Captain America: Brave New World – $27 million
  • Mickey 17 – $11 million
  • Interstellar (re-release) – $10 million

Financial Highlights

IMAX reported a revenue increase of 10%, reaching $87 million, surpassing Wall Street expectations of $84.2 million. Adjusted earnings per share remained steady at 13 cents, though shares did experience a decline in after-hours trading.

Growth in Filmed for IMAX Releases

The company is witnessing an unprecedented number of films shot with IMAX technology. Over the coming weeks, audiences can expect a series of eight consecutive Hollywood releases filmed using IMAX cameras, starting with Sinners.

Future Projections and Installations

Looking ahead, IMAX remains optimistic about achieving a global box office of $1.2 billion by 2025. The company maintains a robust presence in China, even amidst recent trade tensions that may affect Hollywood film distributions.

System Sales and Growth Strategy

In the first quarter, IMAX successfully signed contracts for 95 new and upgraded systems worldwide, marking its second-best performance for first-quarter sales. CEO Rich Gelfond stated that “the fundamentals of our business have never been stronger,” noting the company’s strong system sales and installations growth as a critical factor in their ongoing success.

Call for Analysts

Further insights into these financial results are anticipated during an analyst call scheduled for 4:30 PM ET, where Gelfond and his team will elaborate on the company’s performance and future outlook.
