Halsey Reflects on Viral Mall Performance and Career Insights
The “Mallsey” Moment
Halsey recently revisited the infamous performance from her teenage years, commonly referred to by fans as “Mallsey.” This discussion took place during a podcast appearance on Owen Thiele’s In Your Dreams.
“Word of caution to those seeking virality is that, when you’re trying anything hoping one thing will go, you don’t get to decide what that one thing is,” Halsey noted. “And that one thing might define you forever,” she added, reflecting on the lasting impact of that moment.
Early Career Context
During the podcast, Halsey explained the circumstances under which the mall performance occurred. At the time, she was gaining popularity on Tumblr, a platform that facilitated fan interactions through meet-ups, irrespective of one’s talent.
Encouraged by her online followers, Halsey chose to host her first impromptu meet-up at King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania. “It was the first time I’d ever met a fan before,” she recalled. When fans asked her to sing, she admitted, “I never sang outside of my bedroom before.”
The Performance
Put on the spot, Halsey confidently performed a cover of Blink-182’s “I Miss You,” complete with the distinct vocal stylings of Tom DeLonge. A fan captured the moment on video, forever documenting what would become a significant part of her narrative.
Reflecting on Her Legacy
While she appreciates her chart-topping single “Without Me” as one of her personal favorites, Halsey mused about her surprise at still being associated with her mall performance. “I sang at the mall once when I was a kid and everyone will remember that until I die, probably,” she acknowledged.
Future Music Endeavors
In the same interview, Halsey shared that she is actively working on new music, which will follow her 2024 album, titled *The Great Impersonator*. Additionally, she discussed her mother’s humorous reactions to her rise in fame during her early Tumblr days.
Recently, Halsey collaborated with Amy Lee from Evanescence on a new single, “Hand That Feeds,” showcasing her continued growth and adaptation in the music industry.
