Greta Gerwig has been announced as the director for Disney’s live-action sequel to The Little Mermaid, titled The Little Mermaid: Beyond the Shore. Following her recent success with the film Barbie, Gerwig is set to guide this follow-up, which will delve into Ariel’s challenges as she adjusts to her new role as a queen and navigates the complexities of connecting her underwater world with the human realm.

Halle Bailey, who portrayed Ariel in the 2023 adaptation, will reprise her role. Alongside her, Jonah Hauer-King will return as Prince Eric, and Melissa McCarthy will play Morgana, Ursula’s vengeful sister. Other familiar faces include Daveed Diggs as Sebastian and Awkwafina as Scuttle. Music remains a central theme, with Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken promising a new soundtrack that will include at least five original songs, featuring Ariel’s journey of love and identity.

In a statement, Gerwig expressed her excitement about the project, emphasizing themes of transformation, courage, and connection as critical elements of the narrative. The sequel aims to explore Ariel’s dual identity, highlighting contemporary issues such as environmental conservation and cultural exchange, which adds a socially relevant aspect to the classic story.

Disney’s growing catalog of live-action adaptations has proven popular, with the first Little Mermaid remake grossing over $1 billion globally. Gerwig’s appointment is seen as a significant choice due to her talent for creating layered and engaging narratives, with many fans expressing their enthusiasm for her direction and vision for Ariel’s character.

Pre-production for The Little Mermaid: Beyond the Shore is set to commence this summer, with filming expected to start in early 2025. The film is slated for release in December 2026, allowing the creative team time to develop a rich and visually stunning sequel, poised to resonate with audiences and continue the legacy of Ariel’s story.
