2025 Met Gala: Celebrating Black Dandyism in Menswear
Overview of the Theme
The upcoming 2025 Met Gala will spotlight menswear with its theme:
“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This theme draws inspiration
from Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.
Remarkably, it’s the first time since 2003 that menswear receives the focal point, allowing for a comprehensive exploration of Black dandyism throughout history.
Understanding Black Dandyism
Originating in the early 18th century, the term Black dandyism refers
to Black men who defied societal norms through their fashion choices.
Items such as custom suits, knee breeches, overcoats, ties, and hats became symbols
of rebellion against the predominantly European fashion landscape.
Later interpretations appeared in the form of iconic ‘70s zoot suits and the
trendy monogrammed suits of the ‘90s, popularized by Harlem designer Dapper Dan.
Today, a new wave of Black designers continues to redefine dandy fashion, broadening its expression
to include womenswear, streetwear, and gowns. Notable figures, like Pharrell Williams in
collaboration with Louis Vuitton, are at the forefront of this transformation, while the essence
of dandyism—subversive and bold—remains unchanged.
