Banger: A Unique Insight into DJ Culture by So Me
The streaming platform Netflix has recently released a film titled Banger, created by the talented artist and director So Me, known for his work with Ed Banger Records. The film, which debuted on April 1, delves into the intricate world of DJing through the lens of its aging protagonist, Scorpex.
Plot Overview
The narrative centers around Scorpex, portrayed by Vincent Cassel, who finds himself entangled in a mission with an intelligence agency. He perceives this as an opportunity to regain his former glory through a key banger associated with the film. The cast includes Rachel Dimezell and Laura Felpin, with an appearance by the esteemed French DJ Kavinsky.
Banger is not just a standalone film; it expands upon a character first introduced in a 2021 television mini-series, 6 X Confiné.e.s, where Scorpex was also featured. According to So Me, the film evolved from a previously directed episode and serves as a more comprehensive exploration of the character.
Behind the Scenes: Inspiration and Creation
So Me, born Bertrand Lagros de Langeron, expressed that he had long envisioned a movie set in the DJ world, stating: “I was already contemplating a movie in this world, and the opportunity of shooting the [episode] came a little bit after actually.” He elaborated on the emotional complexity of his character, noting that Scorpex illustrates the universal struggle of aging in an industry that largely favors youth.
“He generates empathy because we’re all sooner or later confronted with a cooler, younger version of ourselves,” So Me reflected on the character’s relatability. Drawing upon his experiences as a director working with numerous DJs, he aims to present a satirical yet affectionate portrayal of the competitive and ego-driven nature of the scene.
From Music Videos to Film Directing
Transitioning from directing renowned music videos for artists such as Justice and Major Lazer, So Me reveals that filmmaking was always a career aspiration. He compares the two mediums, explaining that while they share similarities like framing and lighting, the storytelling demands of a feature film are notably different. He highlighted, “However, there are also some major differences, such as directing actors, basically telling a more complex story.”
Authenticity and Fantasy
In creating Banger, So Me strived to accurately portray the dynamics of the DJ industry, balancing authenticity with entertainment. “I hope [the film] shows an educated version of how things actually happen in the studio, backstage, et cetera,” he stated. The objective is to present a more glamorous, imaginative version of this lifestyle that resonates with viewers outside the DJ culture.
