Young Scooter Passes Away on His 39th Birthday

March 29, 2023

Details Surrounding His Death

Young Scooter, whose real name was Kenneth Edward Bailey, tragically lost his life on the night of March 28, coinciding with his 39th birthday. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and local authorities confirmed the incident following a police response to reports of a weapon dispute at a residence in Atlanta, Georgia.

Police Response and Investigation

According to Atlanta Police Lt. Andrew Smith, officers arrived to find a precarious situation. After a man inside the residence refused to engage with law enforcement, he barricaded himself, leading police to establish a perimeter around the house. During this tense scenario, two men attempted to escape from the rear, with one of them returning and the other, identified as Young Scooter, leaping over two fences.

Lt. Smith stated, “When officers located him on the other side of the fence, he appeared to have suffered an injury to his leg.” The rapper was then transported to the Grady Marcus Trauma Center, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

During a press briefing, Lt. Smith dispelled circulating rumors on social media that suggested Young Scooter had been shot by the police, clarifying, “The injury that was sustained was not via the officers on scene. It was when the male was fleeing.”

Reactions from Peers and Fans

The sudden loss of Young Scooter sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community. Notable artists took to social media to express their heartbreak and remember the icon. Playboi Carti shared a poignant message on his Instagram Stories, captioning the news with “SMFH.” Rapper Quavo also reflected on the tragedy via X, accompanied by emojis expressing sorrow and confusion: “ion understand,” alongside a video of Scooter in performance. Young Scooter’s own Instagram highlighted birthday tributes from fans and friends throughout the day.

A Look Back at His Career

Originally hailing from South Carolina, Young Scooter relocated to Atlanta at the age of nine, a city that served as a backdrop to his evolving music career. He gained initial attention with his 2012 track “Colombia” and later collaborated with prominent names in hip-hop such as Future, Juicy J, and Young Thug on the 2014 track “DI$Function.” His profile on the Billboard charts rose as he featured on Young Thug’s “Guwop” in 2016, which peaked at No. 45 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and Future & Juice WRLD’s “Jet Lag,” which marked his only appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018, peaking at No. 72.

As investigations continue, Billboard has reached out to both the Atlanta Police Department and representatives for Young Scooter for further clarification.
