by Artist Highlight Contributor

On June 28, 2025, the Heritage Museum of Orange County hosted an extraordinary event titled Soulful Salute, celebrating emerging musical talent and honoring Black music icons. This event, part of the ongoing observance of Black Music Month, provided a stage for up-and-coming artists to showcase their music while also recognizing the profound influence of Black artists on the music industry.

The event took place in Santa Ana, California, and attracted an eclectic crowd of music enthusiasts, industry professionals, and community members, all of whom were eager to witness the performances of the next generation of musical stars. Held in the heart of Orange County, Soulful Salute’s mission was to highlight the contributions of Black musicians across all genres—from jazz to hip-hop, R&B, and beyond—while providing a platform for new talent to shine.

Celebrating the Legacy of Black Music Icons

Soulful Salute was as much about paying tribute to the pioneers of Black music as it was about uplifting new voices in the industry. The event featured performances by several emerging artists, but it also included special segments that honored legendary figures like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye, whose contributions to music and culture have left an indelible mark on generations of listeners worldwide.

One of the highlights of the event was a live tribute performance that featured local musicians covering iconic songs by these legends. These renditions of classic songs, including “Respect” by Aretha Franklin and “What’s Going On” by Marvin Gaye, brought the crowd to its feet, reaffirming the lasting impact of these artists on the music industry and popular culture.

“It’s humbling to be able to pay tribute to the legends who paved the way for so many of us,” said Alexis Monroe, a rising star in R&B, who performed during the tribute segment. “Their music is timeless, and we stand on their shoulders every time we create and perform.”

Emerging Artists Take the Stage

Throughout the evening, the spotlight also shone brightly on new artists who are making waves in the music industry. The Cedar Tree Collective, a group of young musicians known for blending traditional soul, jazz, and hip-hop, delivered a powerful performance that had the audience captivated from start to finish. Their fusion of genres created a fresh sound that resonated deeply with the diverse crowd.

“The opportunity to be here tonight and perform is a dream come true,” said Malik Johnson, the lead singer of the group. “This stage is where we connect with the people, and that’s what it’s all about—sharing our music, our stories, and connecting on a human level.”

The evening also featured performances by solo artists like Jasmine Green, a talented jazz singer who has garnered attention for her smooth, soulful voice, and Kendrick Young, an up-and-coming rapper known for his powerful lyrics and storytelling. Each performance showcased the immense talent of these young artists, proving that the future of Black music is in very capable hands.

“I think it’s important for festivals like this to give emerging artists a platform,” said Jasmine Green, who closed out the evening with a heartfelt rendition of a ballad she wrote about love and loss. “We are all part of this living, breathing tradition of music, and to be able to add our voices to that legacy is both humbling and exciting.”

A Vibrant Celebration of Music and Culture

Beyond the musical performances, the Soulful Salute event featured various activities that helped create an immersive experience for attendees. Local food vendors offering soul food, craft beer, and artisan coffee set up stands throughout the venue, adding to the cultural ambiance of the event. Additionally, a local art exhibit showcased visual artists who were influenced by the sounds and themes of Black music.

The festival was not just an entertainment event but a celebration of culture, where people came together to reflect on the history of Black music while looking forward to the future of the industry.

“We’re here to celebrate where we’ve been and where we’re going,” said Tasha Williams, an event organizer. “Soulful Salute is about recognizing the power of music to bring people together, heal, and inspire change.”

Looking to the Future

As Soulful Salute came to a close, organizers expressed their excitement for future editions of the event, with plans to expand it nationally and include more genres and artists. The goal is to make this an annual tradition that continues to highlight the incredible contributions of Black artists while providing a platform for new talent to emerge.
