Ricko Dupri Sample, the innovative founder of Ricko Records, embodies the essence of creativity, resilience, and adaptability. With a diverse background that spans literature, film, music, and legal advocacy, Ricko’s unique journey reflects a commitment to inspiring others while ensuring independent creators have the legal protections and opportunities they deserve. His path, which defies conventional expectations, has been marked by groundbreaking achievements in both artistic and academic fields, as well as a relentless drive to empower fellow creators.
Ricko’s early years were marked by an ambition to explore numerous fields, including science, medicine, and acting. However, an unexpected twist led him to discover a deep passion for writing, starting with the Bigfoot Script Challenge in 2018. Drawing inspiration from his mother’s captivating tales about Bigfoot, he crafted his first TV pilot script. Though it was his debut attempt, it ignited a passion for storytelling, prompting him to adapt the script into a book. By the end of 2018, Ricko released Bigfoot Untold, a coming-of-age tale set in the eerie town of Crowded Lake that blends folklore and suspense, which was published through Tellwell Talent.
The success of his first book encouraged Ricko to continue his creative pursuits, leading to the publication of his second book, The Three Mysterious Tales. At just 14 years old, Ricko wrote this book as a second-year undergraduate student, drawing from Indonesian folklore and real-life mysteries to create an intricate narrative. His third book, Refuse to Lose, became a deeply personal project. Inspired by his father’s battle with stage-4 bladder cancer, COPD, and other life-altering struggles, the book explores themes of legal injustice and resilience. It also sparked his growing interest in law and advocacy.
Ricko’s creative journey extends beyond literature. After earning an Associate’s Degree in Visual & Performing Arts from Green River College, he volunteered at a food bank in Auburn, Washington, where he continued his commitment to community service. This sense of service also found its way into his creative work, motivating him to advocate for independent artists in legal spaces.
In late 2019, Ricko relocated to California to further his studies at the prestigious New York Film Academy (NYFA), focusing on acting, screenwriting, and filmmaking. However, his academic pursuits were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted him to explore new creative avenues. During this period, Ricko turned his attention to music production, releasing four instrumental albums: First, Summer, Enjoy, and Sunset. His exploration into music production, which included navigating the complexities of independent music publishing, sparked a deep interest in the legal aspects of the creative industry. The challenges he faced with music distribution platforms further fueled his passion for advocating for the rights of artists.
Ricko’s journey is not just about creating; it is also about ensuring that creators have the legal rights and protections they deserve. To this end, Ricko pursued a degree in legal studies at American Public University System (APUS), gaining critical insights into the legal challenges faced by independent creatives. His studies, combined with his own experiences, strengthened his resolve to bridge the gap between creativity and advocacy.
As of 2024, Ricko returned to NYFA to complete his studies, graduating Summa Cum Laude in August. His academic journey complements his professional pursuits, positioning him as a thought leader at the intersection of art and law. With this comprehensive background, Ricko is committed to advocating for the rights of artists, whether in film, literature, or music.
Ricko’s work has been widely recognized for its depth and cultural significance. He is particularly proud of his ability to blend diverse cultural narratives into his work, helping underrepresented stories reach a wider audience. Whether in his writing, music, or advocacy, Ricko seeks to empower others to pursue their passions while safeguarding their creative rights. His unique combination of artistic talents and legal expertise sets him apart from his peers, offering a multifaceted approach to creativity and justice.
Ricko’s ability to overcome challenges and pivot across different creative industries makes him a standout figure in the realm of independent artistry. His commitment to fairness, both in his creative work and legal advocacy, allows him to offer a voice to those who may otherwise be overlooked in the creative sector. Whether through his books, films, music, or his work in legal studies, Ricko continues to inspire, challenge, and uplift others.
