Primus, the notable rock band, has recently made headlines following the departure of their long-time drummer, Tim ‘Herb’ Alexander. Alexander resigned unexpectedly in October, citing a loss of passion for performing, which took the band members, Les Claypool and Larry Lalonde, by surprise. Despite a successful tour phase leading up to his decision, they expressed respect for his choice, mentioning the need to adapt to this sudden change.
Just two months after Alexander’s exit, Primus is moving forward and preparing for auditions to fill the drummer role. The band’s recent performance, their first since Alexander’s departure, took place on December 30 at the Fox Theater in Oakland, California. The show featured a six-song set with Brian ‘Brain’ Mantia, who had previously drummed for Primus before Alexander took over in 1996. Mantia’s return stirred nostalgia, as he had played with the band until their disbandment in 2000.
In their search for a new drummer, Primus emphasized the importance of musicality and groove, stating they are looking for candidates who can contribute to the band’s unique sound. They also cautioned against scams targeting prospective applicants, reminding potential drummers to be vigilant against con artists.
Looking ahead, Primus is scheduled to perform at a festival in the Dominican Republic in March, with more touring plans to follow, including a joint tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle in April. The band’s resilience and proactive approach suggest a commitment to continue their musical journey despite recent changes.
