Meta, the tech company behind Facebook and Instagram, is attempting to transition from its costly Metaverse initiative to capitalize on the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI). After undergoing significant layoffs and criticism, Meta’s founder Mark Zuckerberg introduced an AI chatbot featuring celebrity alter egos last year, which was ultimately deemed unappealing to the younger audience Meta aims to engage. As a result, this chatbot was abandoned.
In response, Meta launched AI Studio, enabling users to create their own chatbots and avatars. These customizable AI characters can interact with platform users, which Meta hopes will attract younger demographics. According to Connor Hayes, a Meta executive, these AI avatars are intended to function as platform users, complete with profiles and the capability to generate content. The goal is to keep these AI entities active within Facebook and Instagram to enhance user engagement.
However, the introduction of AI into social media raises concerns, particularly given recent criticisms regarding the overreliance on AI in educational contexts and its potential for spreading harmful content. Ongoing legal challenges highlight these dangers, suggesting a growing apprehension among parents about the influence of AI.
Additionally, the platforms currently face challenges with AI-generated content that some users describe as spam. Such content, often devoid of originality, continues to flood feeds, making it difficult to discern meaningful engagement. On top of that, reports suggest that much interaction on these platforms may be driven by bots rather than genuine human interest.
To strengthen its position in AI, Meta has merged its research divisions to enhance capabilities related to artificial general intelligence (AGI). Yet, many experts have expressed concerns regarding privacy and the company’s track record with transparency related to AI development.
As Meta navigates these changes, the focus remains on whether AI will provide the desired engagement or if users will seek other platforms for authentic communication.
