Kendrick Lamar has released a new album titled GNX, following the themes explored in his previous work, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. This 2022 album reflected Kendrick’s personal growth and marked a pivotal moment in his career as he planned to shift focus from music to his company, pgLang. However, his competitive spirit, reignited by his relationship with Drake, led him back into the music scene.
During the MTV VMAs, Kendrick hinted at the cultural state of hip-hop with a surprise performance, declaring that “it’s time to see the party die.” This was a precursor to his recent album, which was released unexpectedly through pgLang/Interscope Records. GNX showcases a blend of aggression and introspection, as Kendrick articulates his vision for a better hip-hop industry.
The album opens with “wacced out murals,” featuring unexpected mariachi vocals that transition into a darker sound. Kendrick expresses his frustrations, emphasizing his determination to maintain joy despite the challenges he faces. Throughout the tracks, he takes aim at notable figures within the industry, including J. Cole for his involvement in the Drake feud, and critiques Snoop Dogg and Lil Wayne for their actions and inactions regarding the current hip-hop landscape.
Kendrick’s lyrics also include pointed references to Drake and a broader critique of the genre, signaling his discontent with its current state. His reflections reveal a longing for the past, suggesting both nostalgia and a desire for authentic artistic expression in hip-hop today.
