The munitions factory set was specifically designed to highlight the critical roles that women played during the war, as demonstrated by the character Rita, portrayed by Saoirse Ronan. Stockhausen faced challenges in sourcing materials and building these elaborate sets, noting the logistical difficulties of working in remote locations.
In constructing the Café de Paris, which McQueen describes as glamorous, the team chose materials that could realistically be destroyed on screen. The design process involved sketches and cardboard models, culminating in a set that resembled a large sculpture. The subway station set also included innovative engineering to depict a flood scenario, with careful planning to ensure safety during filming.
Key moments, such as the near-drowning scene experienced by the young protagonist George, are designed to evoke the turmoil faced by civilians in war. Stockhausen emphasizes that these sets contribute to the film’s epic scale, setting a new benchmark for British cinema.
McQueen and Stockhausen have previously collaborated on acclaimed projects, including “12 Years a Slave” and “Widows.” “Blitz” premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and was released in select theaters and on Apple TV+ shortly thereafter. The film represents a significant achievement in both storytelling and production design.
