Karate Kid: Legends – A New Chapter Unveiled

At CinemaCon held in Las Vegas, Ben Wang and Ralph Macchio presented an exclusive glimpse of the upcoming film,
Karate Kid: Legends, which is set to hit theaters on May 30.
This new installment in the famed franchise pairs Wang, a young kung fu talent, with the legendary Jackie Chan and
Macchio, who reprises his role as the original Karate Kid.

Plot Overview

The story follows Li Fong, portrayed by Wang, who has to confront his past after experiencing a family loss.
Uprooted from Beijing, he relocates to New York City with his mother. Struggling to adapt to his new environment,
Li’s peaceful intentions are challenged as conflicts seem to follow him.
In an unexpected turn of events, he becomes involved in a karate competition to help a new friend, realizing that
he needs more than just his innate skills.
Thus, his kung fu mentor, Mr. Han (played by Chan), calls upon Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) to assist in refining
Li’s fighting technique, merging their distinct styles for a climactic showdown.

Key Scenes and Character Dynamics

The presentation at CinemaCon included three pivotal scenes:

  • Mr. Han unexpectedly visits Li, keeping him on his toes and providing crucial guidance.
  • In California, Chan’s character persuades a hesitant Sensei LaRusso to make the journey to New York.
  • Both mentors collaborate in New York, where they train Li, emphasizing unity with the phrase “Two branches, one tree,” as noted by Wang.

Production Details

Directed by Jonathan Entwistle, known for The End of the F***ing World, and scripted by Rob Lieber,
Karate Kid: Legends is produced by Karen Rosenfelt, with executive production credits going to
Jenny Hinkey and Macchio himself. The film also features notable talents such as Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley,
and Ming-Na Wen.

Franchise Continuation

Marking the sixth installment within the beloved Karate Kid franchise, this film follows the events of the
2010 remake featuring Jaden Smith. The narrative timeline for Legends is set three years
after the conclusion of the acclaimed series Cobra Kai, in which Macchio also stars.
