Remembering David Lynch: Naomi Watts Reflects on Their Final Meeting

Naomi Watts, the acclaimed actress known for her performances in various cinematic masterpieces, has shared poignant memories of David Lynch, the visionary director who significantly impacted her career. More than two decades since their first collaboration, Watts expressed her gratitude for Lynch and the artistic relationship they cultivated over the years.

A Lasting Tribute

Following Lynch’s death at the age of 78 in January, Naomi Watts reminisced about their final lunch together. The meeting took place in late November, attended by Lynch and fellow actress Laura Dern, both known for their longstanding collaboration with the legendary director.

A Memorable Gathering

Reflecting on that day, Watts disclosed, “We had a beautiful lunch at his house. I knew he’d been unwell, but he was in great spirits. He wanted to go back to work — Laura and I were like, ‘You can do it! You could work from the trailer.’ He was not, in any way, done. I could see the creative spirit alive in him.”

Grieving a Legend

The news of Lynch’s passing affected Watts profoundly, describing it as “so deeply, deeply upsetting.” Lynch’s passing was reported as a result of cardiac arrest, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cited as a contributing factor.

Career Milestones with Lynch

Naomi Watts’s career skyrocketed with her performance in Lynch’s 2001 film Mulholland Drive, which became a defining moment in her professional journey. Subsequently, she appeared in Lynch’s 2002 short Rabbits, as well as the 2006 film Inland Empire and the 2017 revival of Twin Peaks, which marked the director’s last project.

Reflections on Their Friendship

Describing Lynch’s influence, Watts stated, “I thought I would see him in a couple of weeks [after that last lunch] because I was here in L.A. There’s a lot I could share but I want to be private about it because of his family. But it was a really powerful meeting that filled me with just so much love and hope.”

Watts has previously characterized Lynch as “a real mentor and a friend,” emphasizing his pivotal role in her journey in America. “I wouldn’t have stayed had I not met David Lynch,” she concluded.
