Adam Mckay Warns 'wicked' Could Be Banned In Us 'within

Adam McKay, known for directing the film “Don’t Look Up,” has expressed concerns about the potential for movies like “Wicked” to be banned in the United States in the future. He emphasizes that “Wicked Part 1” stands out as a significant and radical addition to Hollywood’s landscape, addressing themes like radicalization, careerism, fascism, and propaganda.

McKay acknowledges that while the original stage production and book of “Wicked” are older, the film’s release coincides with a rise in right-wing sentiments and propaganda in America. He foresees that if the current trends continue, the film may face bans within the next few years.

He likens “Wicked” to other notable Hollywood films he considers “radical,” such as “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Hunger Games.” His remarks underline the film’s politically charged nature. Additionally, “Wicked” is receiving critical acclaim, particularly for Ariana Grande’s performance, which McKay has praised as outstanding. The film has also gained recognition in award circuits, securing nominations for a Golden Globe Award for Best Musical or Comedy, with both Grande and co-star Cynthia Erivo nominated for their performances.
