“Culpa Tuya” (Your Fault) is set to premiere on Prime Video on December 27th, 2024. This film is directed and written by Domingo González and is a follow-up to his successful first film, “Culpa Mía” (My Fault). González expresses optimism about the new installment, stating that it surpasses the original and that the upcoming sequel, “Culpa Nuestra” (Our Fault), expected in 2025, is even better.
The director acknowledges a common trend where sequels often don’t match the success of their predecessors. He claims, however, that audiences believe the second film in this series is superior to the first, with early reviewers of the third movie asserting that it is the best of the trilogy. The movie features Nicole Wallace as Noah and Gabriel Guevara as Nick, exploring their relationship.
González and his team strategically planned the sequels before the release of the first film, which may have helped them avoid the pitfalls associated with making sequels. He collaborated with Sofia Cuenca on the subsequent scripts while maintaining a swift production pace. The source material comes from Mercedes Ron’s “Culpables” trilogy, which has achieved significant sales, including over 3 million copies sold and extensive readership on platforms like Wattpad.
“Culpa Mía” became immensely popular during its opening weekend, ranking among Prime Video’s top 10 films in over 190 countries, marking it as a leading foreign original movie on the platform. González noted the global success of the film exceeded their expectations, particularly in regions like India and Indonesia.
The premiere for “Culpa Tuya” took place at Madrid’s Palacio Vistalegre Arena, attracting around 4,000 attendees, showcasing a strong fan base for the series. González’s vision aims to elevate the action and humor of the series, focusing on themes of first love and universal emotions while addressing the intelligence of young audiences. He emphasizes the importance of treating this generation with respect and portraying young characters as more nuanced and relatable. In the upcoming film “Culpa Tuya,” the characters Noah and Nick face increasingly complex challenges as they mature. The screenplay, shaped by feedback from fans, carefully addresses certain elements from the second book that had drawn objections from the audience. Director González acknowledged that input from social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram heavily influenced their approach to adapting the script.
González explained that creating the script posed challenges due to the strong opinions expressed by fans about specific storylines. As a result, the team decided to reinterpret certain aspects of the narrative while ensuring it remained true to the source material. They believe they struck a satisfactory balance between fans’ preferences and the story’s essence.
The second installment of the “Culpable” series is set for release in just a few days, with a third film slated for next year. Additionally, an English-language version titled “Culpa Mia – My Fault: London” is currently in development.
Prime Video’s involvement extends beyond “Culpable,” as it is also supporting the production of a new adaptation based on DiMelo Bajito’s work, “Tell Me Softly.” This reflects the platform’s commitment to expanding its content offerings and engaging with diverse narratives.
